Why is the US Mint's new pricing policy on precious metals out of whack? Last week the one ounce Buffalo W uncirculated gold coin was $974 and now it's gone up $134. The price of gold dropped $50. Now the one ounce was under a thousand when gold at 880 and now at $1.178 when at 840. Oh well they are sold out anyway, but in the future that will be a heck of premium, although like you both said better than paper for now and also more demand. The U.S. mint no longer makes it's own planchets and has to buy them from companies. This makes them cost more than the gold in them. That cost is passed on to the buyer. When they were bought gold could have been higher so that also is passed on to the buyer. The coins though actually bullion are collected so all the production costs as well as a profit are paid by the buyer. American bullion coins sell well in the world so their is a premium on them. As an example a Canadian silver maple leaf sells for less that a American silver eagle even though they have the same amount of silver. Most of the time the maple leaf actually has a much lower mintage and is rarer. Hope this helps.
